REQUEST MADE
Full-Back Needed (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. No names have been mentioned but it is likely that the manager of the Lions (Mr D. J. O’Brien) has asked for the Welsh full-back, T. Price, as a replacement for D. Rutherford. Rutherford broke an arm playing against ManawatuHorowhenua at Palmerston North on Wednesday. Mr O’Brien said last evening that he could not see how the team could play another 11 matches with only one fullback and therefore he had asked for a player who could fill that position. He was not prepared to say who he would ask for but added that it was up th the Home Unions tour committee to decide after he had made his recommendations.
Rutherford was operated on yesterday at Palmerston North and had a steel plate inserted in his arm. Mr O’Brien would not say whether Rutherford would play again on tour or if he would return to Britain. However, if normal practice is followed the New Zealand union will ask Rutherford to stay on as its guest if he cannot play again.
The captain, M. J. CampbellLamerton, did not travel with the team to Auckland but instead returned to Wellington for treatment to his injured ankle. Yesterday, he aggravated the injury playing indoor basketball.
