England Gets £22,000 Incentive To Win

(N.Z.P A Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The West Germans will play for glory when they meet England in the World Cup soccer final tomorrow.

But the England team will play for glory—plus £22,000 — which it will share if England wins the trophy. The English Football Association has promised the players this sum as a bonus. Probably it will be shared in the form of £l5OO to each firstteam player .and £5OO each for the reserves. Anvone playing in all six games for England will also earn £4BO appearance money. Two Sunday newspapers and various industrial firms have also offered incentives from which both teams will benefit A spokesman for the Ger-

man Football Association, Dr. W. Gerhardt said at his team’s headquarters: "There is no bonus paid by our association to players. “The principle is that the honour of representing West Germany is enough, and we are convinced that they would not play any better if they were promised big sums.” For each player who appears for West Germany, the association pays his club 1000 marks (about £9O) a match. Of this amount the player may receive 250 marks as a bonus from his club—which is no more than he would get from his club for a win. Heavily Backed Some big bets were made yesterday on England winning the cup. One leading London book-

maker reported he had laid England bets totalling £20,000. England is no<w 7 to 4 on to beat West Germany. The odds against Germany are 11 to 8. Russian Suspended Yesterday, the International Football Federation disciplinary committee suspended the Russian winger, I. Chislenko, for three international matches. This rules Chislenko out of the Russian side to play Portugal in the third and fourth place final at Wembley today (6.30 a.m. New Zealand time). He is the eighth player to be suspended during the series. Chislenko was sent off by the referee during the semifinal match against West Germany on Monday.
