MURDER CHARGE

Found Not Guilty (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 28. A jury this evening found Neil John Dougherty, aged 50, a farmer, of Nihoniho, guilty of manslaughter and not guilty of murder. Dougherty was accused of murdering his wife, Whakae Freda Heather Dougherty, at their home on March 20. The hearing in the Supreme Court was a retrial. The jury took nearly seven hours to reach its verdict. During retirement it asked for the interpretation of certain aspects of the rule on provocation. Mr Justice Woodhouse, giving a ruling, said the written question of the jury was directed to time lag and the build-up period for provocation.

Dougherty was remanded in custody for sentence.
