Thant Appeals To Israel

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, July 28. The United Nations Secretary-General, U Thant, yesterday urged Israel to defer plans for cultivation in the southern demilitarised zone near the Syrian frontier in order to smooth the way for talks aimed at easing tension between the two nations.

In a Note to the Security Council, he said that Lieuten-ant-General O. Bull, the Norwegian chief of the United Nations truce supervision organisation, intended to seek talks on the problems involved. Their settlement would “greatly help in relaxing the present tension between the two countries,” U Thant said. His Note accompanied two separate reports based on in-

formation by General Bull on the July 14 air raid by Israel on Syrian engineering installations in the Lake Tiberias area.

The Security Council debate on the Israeli raid and the events leading up to it is due to be resumed today. U Thant is in Moscow but he conferred by telephone with senior officials at the United Nations before the documents were issued.
