Chemist Fined For Receiving Drugs
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 27. A chemist was fined £l5O by Mr M. B. Scully, S.M., today for receiving stolen oral contraceptives.
Hayo Kiffen, aged 27, a cargo worker, charged with the theft of 207 packets of oral contraceptives, was fined £5O. Mr 1. A. Borrin, for Kiffen. said his client was short of funds after coming from Australia. He was paying a high rent and could not cope with his financial difficulties and that led him to steal the drugs. "I look upon this as a serious offence because of the character of the goods taken,” said the Magistrate. Thomas Frederick Booth, aged 28, a cargo worker, who was charged with receiving
from Kiffen 180 packets of the drug, was fined £5O. Detective-Sergeant B. A. Toomey said Booth decided to try to sell the drugs to the chemist, Eric Raymond Hargreaves, aged 48. The man said Hargreaves was the last person who should have taken the drugs. Detective-Sergeant Toomey said Hargreaves could not account for the drugs being in his shop and later told the police he had paid £54 for the goods. Hargreaves was aware the drugs were stolen and knew they were a restricted drug, obtainable by prescription only.
