From C.W.I. Meetings
There was a good attendance at the Bryndwr Country Women’s Institute July meeting to discuss remits for the federation’s conference in Wellington. The guest speaker was Miss Eva Sprott who spoke of her work with an airline company and her recent visit to the United States. Bishopdale.—A make-up demonstration, using one of the members, was given by Mrs E. Hore and Mrs E. Levin. Three new members were welcomed. Centre.—Mrs I. Baxter, vice-president, presided. A talk and films of early Christchurch was given by Mrs I. Hies of the Canterbury Museum. Greendale^—The recent C.0.R.5.0. appeal had raised
more than £9O, Mrs J. Naughton reported. The institute’s 34th birthday party was held at Mrs G. Shipley’s home in June. At the function the Winifred Russell Trophy and prize for home-craft and was presented to Mrs E. J. Ridgen by Mrs N. Shipley. Mrs G. A. Ridgen showed some interesting slides on her recent overseas trip. At this month’s meeting Mrs T. Willmore Goodwin gave a short talk and showed a film on the Cancer Research Society. Hillsborough - Heathcote. —Forty-three visitors from Rangiora and Kaiapoi were welcomed at a social afternoon. An auction sale was held to cover expenses for the conference. Lyttelton.—A group visited
the senior citizens of Riccarton, presenting a programme of entertainment. Regret was expressed at the resignation of Mrs C. Gilmore, a foundation member and loyal worker. Spencerville.—Scrap books, handwork, bedsocks for Templeton Hospital were received. Electric fry-pan cooking was demonstrated by Mrs E. Arnst South Brighton.—The institute members were hosts to a Hawarden C.W.I. group at a luncheon. Mrs L. J. Dixey, president, welcomed the guests. The glee circle entertained the Sydenham senior citizens during the month. Social afternoons and meetings, with speakers and entertainment, were held by Mairehau, North Beach, Springfield, Sumner and Coalgate institutes.
