The N.Z. Pound
Sir, —It always seems absurd that hearsay evidence is admissible in Parliamentary debate. Mr Nordmeyer is reported today as saying, “I am bound to point out that I know of people who thought New Zealand’s financial position was much worse than it is,” etc. Does he really know anyone? “Know of” is a phrase for rumour. The Labour Government in Britain is faced with a further run on the pound. Devaluation of sterling is the threat to the New Zealand pound, and the real reason for the caution of moneychangers Mr Nordmeyer has brought home as a traveller’s tale.—Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. July 27, 1966.
