Water Safety Essays
There was evidence of original thinking in many of the essays submitted in the Canterbury section of the Water Safety Committee’s annual competition, said the youth activities officer with the Internal Affairs Department (Mr L. J. Coughlan). Mr Coughlan said 175 entries had been received and the judges had selected six, three from each division, to be sent to Wellington for national judging. One especially imaginative entry had been written in the form of a short storyThe national winners, who will receive £2O for first prize, £lO for second and £5 for third, will be announced on August 12. There will be 14 consolation prizes, each of £2. The Canterbury division winners are: Division One (Forms one and two): Janet Joynt (Spreydon) 1; Flora Boyd (All Hallow School, Geraldine) 2; Roger Weavers (Our Lady of the Snows School, Methven) 3. Division Two (Forms three and four): Lois Webb (Hillmorton High School) 1; Elizabeth Everist (St. Margaret’s College) 2; R. A. Mac Kay (Timaru Boys’ High School) 3.
