Finalists For Schools Public Speaking
To select a representative for the Royal Overseas League secondary schools’ public-speaking contest, the Christchurch branch will hold area finals tomorrow evening. The winner will compete for the Anthony Eden Cup in New Zealand finals at Invercargill on August 31. The subject will be “Hopes and fears for the multi-racial Comonwealth.” Christchurch judges will be Mr J. G. Leggat and Mr G. Bums. The schools and names of Christchurch area finalists are:—
Cashmere High School, Susan Eastwood; Mairehau High School, Darryl Walker; St. Bede’s College, Simon Murdoch; St Margaret’s College, Clare Fitzgerald; Avonside Girls’ High School, Kathryn Haydon; Aranui High School, Robin Jones; St. Mary’s College, Joanne Ballinger; Linwood High School, Evelynn Savage; Hillmorton High School, Murray Rybume; St. Andrews College, Paul Pannell; Hawarden District High School, Heather Baker; Christchurch Girls’ High School, Sarah Gunz; Shirley Boys’ High School, David James Filer; Bumside High School, Denise Blampied; Greymouth High School, Kaye Fitzpatrick.

The competition began with , 37 entries from 17 schools. Last year there were 138 en1 tries from 135 schools.
