OPENING BY GOVERNOR
New Science Buildings
The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) will officially open the new science buildings of the University of Canterbury at Ilam at 2.30 p.m. on Friday, August 19.
At the Governor-General’s request, the ceremony would be as informal as possible and speeches would be brief, the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) told the University Council yesterday. Professor Phillips said the upstairs concourse of the new lecture-theatre block would seat about 500 along its two sides. The new buildings would not be open for public inspection at this time because some sections were not finished and some not fully equipped, but group visits could be arranged through the information office. Later the university might decide to throw the new buildings open to public inspection.
