Canterbury Successes In S.I. Gymnastics

Canterbury gymnasts attending the South Island Championships at Nelson had their most successful competition. Its gymnasts took first places in all grades they participated in except the women's championship. Misses J. Buchanan, H. Johnston and L. Beazley, fresh from their successes at the Otago Championship*, took the major place* in the girls’ championship with Miss L. Walmsley a close fourth. The standard of performance in this grade was very high. A, newcomer to the competitive scene was Mis* J. De Beer who won the junior girl's championship. Her confident manner and ability in this grade placed her well above the other performers.

In the men’s championship the present Canterbury champion, G. Hlseman now competing as a senior gave a polished performance to beat hi* nearest rival, R. Dyson (Nelson), by a comfortable margin. In the youths' championship I. Henderson, D. Goss, R. Graham and D. Empson took the first four positions and in the team competition the six Canterbury entrants were placed first and second. The two women competitors, Misses S. Buxton and S. Claydon. gave creditable performance* and finished second and third respectively.
