Blind Weave Safety Net
Two blind men, Mr R. Warren and Mr R. Gheradi, worked for more than 200 hours in three weeks to weave more than two miles of synthetic rope into this circular safety net at the Foundation for the Blind’s workshop in Parnell, Auckland. In the last week they were helped by Mr G. Gough. The safety net, more than 120 ft in circumference and with a breaking strain of a ton and a quarter, will be used on the chimney being built at the Marsden Point oil-fired power station. When completed the smokestack will be more than 400 ft high and New Zealand’s highest chimney.
Last week, the finished net was taken to the Y.M.C.A. in Pitt street, Auckland, where it was inspected for strength
by the Labour Department and presented to the contractors, Fletcher, Downer, Wilkinson and Davies. The photograph shows from left Mr H. W.
