Greater accuracy of attack gave Nelson a hard-earned win agains Southland, 47-38, in Nelson on Saturday night, to put Nelosn in the running for the South Island men’s A grade indoor basketball title. Close, tight, defensive plav by both teams In the first spell kept the score low for Southland to lead 18-17 at half-time. Nelson's attack was stronger In the second spell and found the basket with greater accuracy to establish a 10-point lead halfway through. D. Charlett, Nelson’s scoring machine, was contained by R. Price in the first spell, but in the second Price found Charlett far more elusive and Charlett scored 21 of Nelson’s points. N. Price (12) was the top scorer for Southland, with R Price netting 10 Ellesmere Beats Nth. Canterbury Ellesmere had a one match advantage against North Canterbury when they met in six representative basketball matches at Leeston on Saturday. Ellesmere won three matches to North Canterbury’s two, with one drawn. North Canterbury overwhelmed Ellesmere 23-10 in the senior match. It was a surprising margin, because in the Forscutt Cup tournament at the end of June. North Canterbury beat Ellesmere by one goal. North Canterbury's team on i Saturday included four replace- : ments for players who were Iwith the Canterbury Country team at Ashburton. Results: senior: North Canterbury 23, Ellesmere 10. New Rubbish Receptacles. —The Timaru City Council’s pilot scheme for the collection of rubbish in disposable paper bags was launched on Thursday.
