Tilby Is Canterbury’s Table Tennis Champion

C. W. C. Tilby (University) won the Canterbury senior men’s singles title at the closed table tennis championships played on Saturday.

His match against N. B. Radford in the semi-finals was the best of the championships and included some excellent shots in its five games. He always looked to be in command against M. A. Cox in the final. The absence of J. Armstrong and N. Brightwell threw the tournament wide open and Tilby and Radford emerged as the best players. H. P. Holt, the top seed, was eliminated by Cox in the quarter-finals while third:eeded K. Ward lost to Rad'ord in the second round. R. I. Scott was another player to improve on his recent form. Club's Great Triumph The tournament was a triumph for the Wallabies Red senior team, alii three members reaching the semi-finals of the men’s singles. Only two of the four semi-finalists were seeded players. The final of the men’s doubles was an excellent match which was won by the youthful combination of Tilby and Ward. There were long rallies with fierce hitting and some great retrieving by Radford and Cox. However, Holt eventually gained success when, with Mrs T. May, he won the mixed doubles in straight games. Mrs May deservedly defeated Mrs M. J. Shadbait in the women’s singles final in straight games. She was able to vary her play In a way Mrs Shadbolt could not match and, although the result of the excellent match was never a foregone conclusion, she won quite comfortably.
