BURIED IN SAND

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 24.

A child was suffocated when the base of a 200 ft sandhill collapsed at Hamilton’s gap, 15 miles north of Waiuku, about 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The dead boy was Harvey Herbert Aspin, aged three, son of Mr and Mrs H. O. Aspin, of Kohekohe, Waiuku.

The boy was playing at the bottom of the cliff with his two-year-old brother when the sand gave way. The younger boy was caught up to his knees but the dead boy was trapped under 4ft of sand.

His father, who was fishing nearby, and other fishermen dug for half an hour before finding the body. They tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation which was continued by a Waiuku doctor but without result.
