Plan For New Inland Seas
fN.Z.P.A.-K«ut«r—Coppripht) PRETORIA A proposal that sea water should be used to form large inland seas in suitable basins, such as the Northern Cape Province, to change climate and increase rainfall, has been put forward by Dr. J. J. Taljaard, assistant research director of the South African Weather Bureau. Dr. Taljaard says that this could only be done if atomic energy becomes much cheaper and available in unlimited amounts in future for pumping water to the basins, and for constructing weirs much larger than any yet attempted. At that stage, he adds, it might, however, be more economic to de-salinate sea water and pump it direct to wherever it is needed, even perhaps for agricultural purposes.
