Barbadoes Street Cemetery

Sir,—l am pleased to see that the City Council has decided that something should

be done about the Barbadoes street cemetery. This area (including most of the adjacent property) presents a view of the Avon in surroundings which cannot do anything to suggest that our city is, in fact, the garden city. With the motorway, this is to be our new gateway. I would therefore urge the council to look to the future. This area (or part of it) was originally intended to be the botanical gardens, so why not now make arrangements to purchase all the properties bounded by Bealey and Fitzgerald avenue, the new motorway, and Kilmore street east as they become vacant, before it is redeveloped? The area could then be set out as a memorial garden park. Road closure within the area would make the motorway be used in preference to existing roads.—Yours etc., LOOK TO THE FUTURE. July 19, 1966.
