Unending Battle?
Sir,—A firm of detergent manufacturers recently claimed that, bf the millions of germs in a supposedly clean sink, their particular product killed 99 per cent of them. Suppose there are a million germs in a sink. After cleaning, one-hundredth of the million are left—that is, 10,000. In good conditions.
germs double in number once in 20 minutes. However, in the sink there will not be optimum conditions; so they will probably double once in every half hour. In half an hour there is 2 per cent of the original; in one hour, 4 per cent; in two hours, 16 per cent; in three and a half hours, 128 per cent. So in less than three and a half hours there are one million germs back again.—Yours, etc., SIXTH FORMER. July 18, 1966.
