Students Work
About 170 students from Canterbury University held a work day on Saturday as part of World University Service week.
The work day controller (Mr J. H. Livesey) said yesterday that it was expected between £lBO and £2OO had been raised. Most of the work was done during the morning and most of the jobs were sawing wood or digging the garden. A group of students from Warwick House built a hut for the Jaycees at Rolleston House.
There were about 200 requests for jobs, and most of these were filled.
Mr Livesey said that the response from students was poor and many had to be approached personally. The response from the public was also not as good as had been expected. The average amount for each job was about £l. A minimum wage of 5s an hour was set by the work day committee. The World University Service works for the advancement of university staff and students. This year, Canterbury University students are interested in helping Nepalese students to raise money for a students’ hostel at Tribhuvan University.
