MEN’S BASKETBALL University A Lead Increased

A narrow win aver Y.M.C.A. In the fourteenth round of the A grade men's basketball competition on Saturday has virtually assured University A of the Inter-dub championship. University A is now five points clear of the second team, Y.M.C.A., with only four garnet to go. It only has to win two of them to take the season’s major dub prize; it should win them all. Points are: University A 22, Y.M.C.A. 17, H. 5.0.8. 14, University B 13, Rex 4, Y-Boys 2. When the competitions splits next week, University a and b, Y.M.C.A. and H. 5.0.8. will comprise the top four. Disappointing UNIVERSITY A 41: P. Stigley 14, G. Williams 9, J. siong 6, J. Stead 6, C. Morris 4. Y.M.C.A. 35: R. Entwistle 15, P. Ross 9, C. FOrney 8, J. Burn 2, M. Clements 1. Although the standard was not all that could be expected, the game retained Its interest because of its bearing on the outcome df the competition. Y.M.C.A., which l>ad to win to have any chance of winning the competition, tried hard, but its combination, affected by new players, broke down at critical stages and it lost. Entwistle was rather jaded but was still well above the rest of his Y.M.C.A. team mates. His scoring ability was invaluable. Ross had a good game, although he was inclined to rush things slightly. P. Stigley reached new heights in his standards, rebounding well and scoring freely with some excellent jump shots. G. Williams showed that he still has the ability to shoot goals, a facet of his play which has not been good in recent weeks. University A led 21-17 at halftime. Burnham Wins BURNHAM 34: C. P. Burnham made an active protest against relegation to the bottom three for the next round which begin* on Saturday when it defeated University B, one of the teams to contest the championship In the top four. Just showed some of his best form this season for University B, rebounding well and scoring a valuable eight points. Key Man Injured REX 31: P. Ward 11. T. Buckingham 10, M. McKay 4, J. McEvdy 4. Y-BOYS IT: C. Harley 7, K. Ewings 4, R. Dew 4, B. Kelly Y-Boys provided Rex. strengthened with its two new players, T. Buckingham and M. McKay, with some unexpectedly strong competition to be within three pointe of it at half-time. Two substitutions after the break spoiled the combination. Harley, one of the key men, was put out with a bleeding nose after being hit by an opponent’s elbow. Rex then made the most of Its opportunities. The general play of Rex was no better than that of Y-Boy«, but its ability to shoot goals gave it a well deserved win. Buckingham, Ward and McKay ail had good games. N. Vincent and K.
