Play To Form In Twelfth Round Of Basketball

Results of the twelfth round of the Canterbury Basketball Association’s senior competition were predictable in Saturday’s matches. Leading teams played to form and further cemented their positions.

West A beat Teachers’ College in spite of spirited opposition, New Brighton soundly beat St. Nicholas, Technical defeated Sacred Heart, and West B had a bye. Results:— West A 27, Teachers’ College 22. New Brighton 32, St Nicholas 15. Technical 41, Sacred Heart 18. Points:—Technical 24, New Brighton 17, West A 15, Sacred Heart 12, St. Nicholas 8, Teachers’ College 2, West B, 0.

West A v. Teachers’ College West A, with a higher competition score than Teachers’ College seemed almost certain to win this match, and this was substantiated by the opening Play. West started strongly, exploiting fast accurate passing and competent shooting. However, Teachers’ College, always an enthusiastic team, gained strength and managed to bring the score to 15-14.

There was a certain amount of technically faulty play from both teams in the middle stages of the game, and obstruction was especially evident. West, in some positions, was playing extremely well, but often players seemed uncertain of where they should be. Teachers’ College managed to bring the score to 16-16, but the number of shots needed bei fore a successful goal hindered I the team's progress. | L. Dawson was playing well * for West and H. Hutton used some every effective passing tactics. These players pulled West’s game ahead to take the lead 26-20. Teachers’ College kept working, but West was too strong and the final score was 27-22.

New Brighton v. St. Nicholas New Brighton went straight to work, gaining three goals in the first few minutes. However, passing on the part of both teams was scrappy, St. Nicholas being particularly affected. St. Nicholas lost a great many balls through inaccuracy. This, combined with unenthuslastic defence play, helped carry New Brighton to 6-1. At half-time the score was 18-7.

After half-time the standard of play deteriorated. Passing became more fumbling, and there were few displays of really strong action. New Brighton pulled Itself together towards the end of the match and gained goals rapidly going from 26-12 to 30-13. This closing up of play ultimately brought New Brighton to a 32-15 victory. Technical v. Sacred Heart Technical, with fast and ordered play, took the first goal easily and went on to take the score to 3-0. Sacred Heart's passing was rather undirected, and this gave Technical many opportunities

for Interception. Although there was some fine defensive play. Sacred Heart was generally un-co-ordinated. Positional play was faulty, with balls being passed back up the field for lack of anyone to receive them. The score rose from 6-1 to 7-3 to Technical. Passing in the Sacred Heart goal third improved, bringing the score to 7-4, but faulty goal shooting kept the score low for Sacred Heart. Technical frequently gave displays of that style which has

kept It at the top of the competition. Some of the play was excellent to watch, with long, hard passes and well-organised combination. Both Technical goal shoots were playing well, and the halftime score was 18-8. After half-time, the standard of play deteriorated, but Technical still maintained its lead. J. Harnett was taking passes nicely, and the Sacred Heart defences were also playing useful games, but Technical proved too strong and won 41-18 .
