Christchurch Wins Entertaining Game
CHRISTCHURCH 14: J. Baird, H. Stuart,, C. Cochrane tries: G. Waterreus, a try and a conversion.
. SUBURBS 8: D. Thomas a try; G. Barrell, a conversion; K. Simpson a penalty goal. Both teams showed a willingness to run and pass and the main game at Rugby Park was entertaining and full of incident. Christchurch did not gain control until late in the second spell and only in the last minute did Waterreus score the try which put the issue beyond doubt. Christchurch gained an overwhelming share of the ball from line-outs but the quick breaking Suburbs forwards and the , shallow defence of the backs , countered this advantage eSec- ; tively. J Only when Waterreus entered - the back-line did Christchurch , show any penetration. : K. King and B. A. Watt com--1 bined well behind the Christ- ; church forwards and Watt plays ed his usual competent game; his taking, passing and kicking . are a model for all players. D. i Arnold did some things well 1 but the tackling of the backs, particularly in the first spell, » was not good. Waterreus at fullback was competent and cool. Suburbs were well served at ® first five-eighths by W. Cottrell. ■ whose shrewd kicks constantly tested the defence and who showed his elusiveness with two strong runs. Simpson also had a good game, his strong run on the wing leading to Suburbs’ tr ßaird and R. Tuhuru had great ' success in the line-outs for Christchurch and were both pro- : rninent in the loose. Cochrane 1 was another on the ball all day and also was sound on defence. The Suburbs' forwards were - very even and although shaded in the line-outs held their own in the open. E. Mallory worked 1 hard In the tight and M. O’Mal- - ley and G. Hartley were also • prominent. > Referee: Mr C. J. Taylor.
