MARATHON ON ICE

Tactical Race Tactics could play a big part in the outcome of the New Zealand ice marathon championship, to be decided over 26 miles 385 yards at Lake Ida tomorrow afternoon. The race—the longest held in New Zealand on ice—promises to be a sterling struggle between the two great Canterbury rivals, R. Falkingham, the title-holder, and the present national speed champion, R. J. Montgomery. Falkingham won the title last season after a lap scoring misunderstanding. Considerable time was lost, but he still broke the national record, with Ihr 41min 27.65ec, a time which still stands. Montgomery was second, I.4sec slower, also well inside the previous record. Montgomery has consistently beaten Falkingham this season and appears to be in slightly better form. Other strong challengers are T. Skerton, the New Zealand 160 metres and 500 metres sprint champion, K. Nicolle, runnerup in the 160 metres, and I. Thompson, a member of the team which won the New Zealand relay championship.
