NEGROES DIE IN CHICAGO RIOTS
(N.Z.P.A Reuter —Copyright' CHICAGO, July 15. Two Negroes, a man and a young girl, were shot and killed in racial violence in Chicago early today involving more than 900 policemen and 5000 Negroes.
Police did not immediately identify the dead man. They said the girl, 14-year-old Roseland Howard, hit by a stray bullet, was dead on arrival at hospital.
The two were the first fatalities in three consecutive nights of racial eruptions on the city’s west side. Negroes and policemen clashed in a series of gunfights in the area last night and two policemen, including
a captain, were shot in the back and wounded. Six other policemen and a fireman were treated for superficial gunshot wounds and released, police said. Chicago hospitals reported that they had treated or admitted more than 50 people. Police said they had arrested 167. At least five Negroes were shot and wounded, police said. The disturbances, which oc) curred mostly in Chicago's' side streets, continued inter-1 mittently into early morning. Gangs of screaming youths; raced from one area to another. They set fire to build ) ings, looted stores and en-l gaged helmet-clad police in running gun battles. Motorists were pulled from their cars and beaten. Glass and bricks littered the 1 streets, and the flames of small fires shimmered in the pre-dawn darkness. Residents in Negro neighbourhoods jeered and shouted i as police cars cruised down i the streets. <
