Cathedral Square
Sir, —What is the matter with Christchurch people? They would not be able to fight their way out of a paper bag. Where the makeshift shelter in the Square is located, I have gone well over my ankles in water. It is time people got some return for paying their rates. —Yours, etc., IRATE RATEPAYER. July 7, 1966. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “If the correspondent is referring to the temporary shelter on the Square frontage of the new Bank of New Zealand, it is pointed out that extra sumps have been installed as a temporary measure to remove surface water, but permanent work cannot be carried out until after the completion of the building. However, an inspection will be made during the next rainy spell ta ensure that all sumps are in working order.”]
