Long Hair
Sir, —John Wilson’s letter only bears out my contention that most of us believe either what we want to believe or what we have been brought up to believe; but we do not put everything to the test as St Paul urges. Paul’s State-
ment in I Corinthians II must surely tell us that while long hair is natural and becoming for a woman, it is unnatural and shameful for a man. If Paul did not actually see Our Lord, he was in close contact with His disciples and possessed a wonderful understanding of Christ’s life and of His teachings. As “Barbarossa” rightly suggests, there is nothing written or modelled or painted at the time when Christ was on earth to prove that He wore long hair. The fact that long haired Nazarites were clearly exceptions. Paul’s clear statement and Roman statues of this period suggest the reverse.—Yours, etc.,
