Van Gogh For £157,000
A van Gogh painting, “Portrait de Mademoiselle Ravoux” was sold in London last week to an American collector for £157,500 pounds —a record price for a work by this artist.
The portrait, of a girl in blue, is of Mlle. Ravoux, the daughter of the owner of a cafe where van Gogh stayed in 1890. The portrait was mentioned in a letter van Gogh wrote to his brother: “Last week I did a portrait of a girl of about 16 in blue against a blue background, the daughter of the people with whom I am staying. “I have given her the portrait but I made a variant of it for you, a size 15 canvas.”
