Drivers Seek Better Traffic Control
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 20. Wellington bus-drivers have decided to defer action on a proposal that they should refuse to pass double-parked vehicles or to stop at bus stops occupied by other vehicles.
About 100 drivers attended the meeting called by their union yesterday. The chairman of the Wellington City Council Transport Committee (Cr. J. H. Turk) and the superintendent of the Traffic Department (Mr J. Anderson), as well as other officers of the City Council’s administrative staff were also present. The drivers suggested the council should remedy Wellington’s traffic problem by towing away illegally and double-parked cars, better
policing of pedestrian crossings, no parking areas and bus stops; issuing tickets to pedestrians breaking by-laws, and educating pedestrians. After hearing addresses by the union's secretary (Mr P. A. Hansen) and Cr. Turk, the drivers decided to refer the matter back to the union’s management committee with a view to giving the council time to improve traffic conditions in Wellington, but it gave the management committee power to take action at any time.
