M.P.s Attend Service

Two cabinet ministers and a member of Parliament took part in the service at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Merivale, on Sunday evening. The sermon was delivered by Mr H. J. Walker, M.P„ who chose his text from the prophet Amos, Ch. 5: 24 “Let justice roll down like waters. Arid righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Mr Walker said government was best when politicians accepted the principles of Christianity in everything they said and did, and strove consciously to follow the ethical rules of conduct found in the Bible.

The first lesson was read by the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) and the second by the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake). Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., was also present at the service, which was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon S. E. Woods. Each year the service was held early in the Parliamentary session, Archdeacon Woods said, to encourage people to think about government and politics in the context of Christian belief and practice.
