City Works Estimates Total Nearly £1m

The City Council’s works department’s annual expenditure is approaching £lm. This year the council has estimated £987,279 to be spent on works. From rates there will be £677,290.

The collection and disposal of dust and . refuse are estimated to cost £92,200 this year. General maintenance of carriageways is provided for with £64,000; and street cleaning is estimated to cost £lOO,OOO. The biggest item in the bridge reconstruction pro-

gramme is the Ferrymead bridge, for which £54,000 is estimated. Last year £14,594 was spent on it. Among roading works planned for the year are the following major items:— Western District Purchase of land.—Kent street, £3200; Antigua street, £6000; Waltham road, £3500;

Antigua street-Strickland street, £7500; Rossall streetStrowan road, £10,000; Whitmore street-Hills road, £4500; Disrael street-Sandy-ford street, £5OOO. Street construction.—Central ward: Cathedral square, £7000; Cashel street, £12,000; Colombo street (Hereford street-Lichfield street, £7500. St Albans: Harewood road, £11,000: Bretts road, £8000: Papanui road (Rugby street to Leinster road), channel conversion, £5OOO (part); Mays road, Papanui roadRutland street, £2600; Weston road same section, £2200; Knowles street, same section, £2200. Southern ward: Frankleigh street, £3100; Ranelagh terrace by Huntsbury, formation, £2000; Aynsley terrace, by Centaurus road, widen, £2100; Edinburgh street, £3300; Neville street, £3000; Cobham street, £2300; Domain terrace, £3OOO. Eastern District Land purchase.—Barton street, £3500.
