C.O.R.S.O. Collection Raises £135,000

More than £135,000 has been collected in G.0.R.5.0.’s nation-wide, house-to-house Freedom from Hunger appeal, according to the national secretary, the Rev. H. G. Dixon.

He said that Saturday’s appeal had boosted the 1966 fund more than a quarter of a million pounds, the Press Association reported.

As returns had not yet been received from all districts and as late donations were just starting to come in, it was not expected that final collection day figures would be available for about another week, said Mr Dixon. “This is a remarkable figure in view of the fact that New Zealanders had, on the eve of the appeal, already given us nearly £120,000 this year—including £75,000 for our special ‘Milk for India’ famine appeal,” Mr Dixon said.

“Overall, New Zealand’s support for C.0.R.5.0. this year has been quite magnificent. We are deeply grateful to our tens of thousands of collectors and to the many more people who have so generously given to help in the continuing world-wide fight against hunger and poverty.” Gift Of £5OO An anonymous donor in Christchurch gave a cheque for £5OO to C.0.R.5.0. on Saturday, the district organiser (Mr G. H. Coley) said yesterday. It was the largest single contribution. Several

cheques for £lOO were also received. With money from 24 of the 96 zones in Christchurch still to come, £13,171 has been raised, while an estimated

£23,000 has been collected in the Canterbury and West Coast area. More than 5000 volunteer collectors, from secondary schools, church and youth groups and charitable organisations took part in Saturday’s appeal in Christchurch. Because of the recent Indian famine appeal and Operation 21, Mr Coley expects the district total to be slightly down this year. Last year £52,000 was raised in the Canterbury and West Coast area. In Christchurch, £17,847 was given. Totals to hand are:—Ashburton, £1266; Greymouth, £941; Hokitika, £478: Kaiapoi, £345; Methven, £335: Rakaia, £450: Lyttelton, £128: Rangiora, £628; Reefton, £230; Temuka, £371: Timaru, £2702; Westport, £264; Waimate, £780: Leeston and Ellesmere County, £663. In country areas some collections would be made during the week because it was not always suitable to have the door-to-door collection on the scheduled Saturday. It will be late July before the final total for the Canterbury and West Coast district is announced. Collectors in Auckland and Northland on Saturday gathered about £3s,ooo—slightly less than the amount raised in the same appeal last year.
