“If the first object of firstclass cricket on Sundays is to make it more accessible to the public, the experiment got away to a notable start at Ilford,’* said “The Times” cricket correspondent of the first day of Sunday county cricket “For the second day of their match with Somerset, Essex had one of their largest home crowds for years. The cricket itself was less auspicious.” The correspondent later said: “It was a pleasant family scene, mother being there with the best of them
to see whether it was all worthwhile. The ground, set in a park, was a congenial place for the outing and the afternoon was warm and sunny.” “Not many years ago, people were saying that Sunday cricket would ‘never come in our lifetime.’ Now it is here—to stay, if there are many more days like the first,” said "The Times.”
