ZONAL CHESS TOURNEY
World Players For Auckland
The West Pacific (Zone 10) zonal championships of the International Chess Federation will be played in Auckland from August 8 to 23. This will be the first time a chess tournament at this level has been held in New Zealand.
The New Zealand representatives will be 0. Sarapu, the national champion, and R. J. Sutton, the runner-up, in the 1965-66 national congress. Both are from Auckland. The Australians chosen are D. Hamilton, the Australian champion, and R. Brent, a 20-year-old Melbourne player who won the national selection tournament for the event
Of the other countries in the zone—Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and China, which has just been admitted—some may not be able to send representatives for political or financial reasons; but Singapore and Hong Kong have both expressed a desire to attend.
Entries do not close until the end of June. Most countries apart from tire two Dominions are entnfed to only one representative.
