■mt * T Notice in Gazette Approval of certain dual headlight systems for cars has been notified by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek) in a notice in the New Zealand Gazette. It revokes former notices on dual headlights and approves certain stipulated systems. Approved systems are those comprising four headlamps, in sets of two closely-spaced lamps, one set on each side of the vehicle, the corresponding lamps of each pair being the same distance from the centre-line of the vehicle, at an equal height from the ground, and approximately equal in power. On main beam all four headlights must be lit. For dipped beam one lamp in each set must go out, and the beam from the other lamp in each set must dip at the rate of four inches in 10ft. The Gazette notice means that four-headlight systems comprising 7in diameter lights are now approved—formerly systems of four sjin lights only were approved, said the Christchurch Transport Department’s chief vehicle inspector (Mr N. G. Bell). , Owners of two-headlight cars can now fit two additional driving lights and wire them to the dip-switch so all four are in use on main beam. Two lights are used on dipped beam, he said. The two outer lights—one on each side —should be the dipped lights, as this would show the width of the vehicle. The additional lights must comply with the Gazette notice by being equidistant from the centre-line of the vehicle and at an equal height from the ground.
