TELEPHONE SURVEY
Overloading Of Six A survey to establish the pattern of telephone traffic is being made by the Post Office as a result of occasional overloading on the inner city telephone circuit involving numbers beginning with six. The regional engineer of the Post Office (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said that some complaints had been received from subscribers, and the survey was being undertaken to determine whether sufficient routes had been provided when the change and introduction of the new Harewood exchange was made on May 13.
Mr Wilkinson said that after the complex change had been made, it took some time for the system to settle down, both electrically and mechanically, but more so for the subscribers to adjust to the new system.
Until subscribers had adjusted, a certain amount of false traffic was generated, and a survey could not be made until this period was over.
A survey was necessary because although traffic was predictable within the laws of probability, an exact assessment of requirements could not always be made. The survey would determine what adjustments were required, Mr Wilkinson said.
