A new “all ordinaries” index, excluding mining shares, was introduced today by the Sydney Stock Exchange. The exchange general secretary (Mr D. M. Butcher) said the new index would clearly portray the increasing importance of mining stocks in Australian investment.

“It is apparent that the mining sector has in fact been a major force in moderating the decline in the level of the all-ordinary index in the last two years,” Mr Butcher said. The old “group 15” index of all ordinary shares, including mining, stood two years ago at 369.73 and yesterday was 324.99.
