NEW CLASSROOM WING

Before the staff and pupils, and about 500 guests, the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) dedicated the new Stephanie Young classroom wing at St. Margaret’s College, yesterday morning.

The two-storey classroom block, built at a cost of about £46,000, marks the completion of stage one of the college’s development. It has

been named after Mrs Young, who was headmistress of the college from 1931 to 1949. It is expected to be completed in two weeks.

Bishop Warren said the naming of the building after Mrs Young was but a small token of appreciation for the intense faith she always had in the future of the college. Mr P. B. Austin, chairman of the college development fund, said it was a fact that independent schools depended on the support of those who believed in them. The new Stephanie Young block re-

fleeted the depth of belief in the college by its old girls, parents, staff, and friends. Mrs Young, after whom the building was named, said she wished to thank the board of governors for allowing her to become “part of the fabric of the college.” She also thanked Bishop Warren and Mrs Warren for the help they had given her during the many trying problems which she had to face during her years as headmistress. “I can only add that it is my constant prayer that the college will become increas-

lingly the kind of school God wants it to become, and I just know it will,” said Mrs Young. To mark his long association with the college, which went back to 1935, Bishop Warren and his wife were each presented with gifts in appreciation of all they had done to help the college through the years. The photograph shows, from left, Mrs Young, Archdeacon S. E. Woods (vicar of Merivale), Mrs Warren, and the Bishop.
