SKATING INTO N.Z. TEAM

Two Christchurch competitors who are in the running to represent New Zealand at the world roller skating championships in Spain this year will endeavour to cement their claims in special trials at the Riccarton Mall this morning. The two skaters are G. Glover and Miss R. Alexander, who will take part in speed trials over 5000 metres and 3000 metres respectively.

The bituminous surface on which they will skate at the Mall will be similar to the surface of the international rink in Belgium, venue of the last world title meeting. Glover and Miss Alexander are two of eight skaters with chances of selection for New Zealand. A squad of 32 skaters was selected after the 1965 national championships and has been gradually reduced to the present number. For four week-ends the final eight competitors have been working hard in special sessions to improve their status with the selectors; the standard achieved so far indicates that the team could be the best New Zealand has sent overseas. The final national trials will be held in Levin next week.
