TAUPO LAND Questions In House On American Offer

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 17. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said in Parliament that he was aware American interests were negotiating for the purchase of high-country land in the NapierTaupo area, but he added that although the land could be developed by New Zealanders, it was not suitable for single-unit development.

Sir Basil Arthur (Opp., Timaru) had asked if Mr Holyoake was aware of the American interests’ negotiation for the purchase of 60,000 acres of land to raise beef for export.

The land was owned by a Maori trust.

Mr Holyoake: My understanding is that the area is less than half the 60,000 acres suggested in the question. The Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan): They want to sell it.

Valuable Dogs Lost Three sheep-dogs, worth £5OO, escaped from the boot of a car which was involved in a collision with another car in Halswell Junction road yesterday afternoon. The dogs belong to Mr H. Herbert, of Pongaroa, a competitor in the national sheepdog trials being held near Tai Tapu. One of the dogs, answering the name of Duby, has a smooth coat, grey, blue and tan: Roy is a long-haired dog, black and tan: and Smoke has a smooth coat, white, blue, and tan.

Any person seeing the dogs is asked to get in touch with the motor accident inquiry branch at the Christchurch Central Police Station.

The dogs got out of the car while it was unattended after the accident. Mr Herbert was taken to the Christchurch Hospital. His condition's not serious.
