Nobody Willing To Sponsor Bill
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, June 17. A bill to legalise homosexuality by consenting adult males in private, last night ran into a major snag which threatens to kill it. The House of Lords passed the bill by 78 votes to 60 on a “free” vote, always allowed to private bills. But its sponsor, Lord Arran, disclosed that nobody was willing to sponsor it in the House of Commons this session. The bill could not become law unless passed by both Houses in the same session. The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Michael Ramsey,
joined Lord Arran in appealing to the Government to take over the bill or provide time in the Commons.
But the Government, which is neutral on this controversial issue, maintained its previous attitude that its own legislative programme is already overloaded. The Parliamentary Undersecretary at the Home Office, Lord Stonhan, said the general feeling in the country was that the bill would eventually become law, but the question of “when" still remained.
