(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) AMSTERDAM. June 17. Armed police stood guard in Amsterdam's battered city centre today against renewed outbreaks of destruction by the gangs of long-haired youths who have been running riot for the last four days.
The youths seized on violent demonstrations by building workers’ protesting at a 2 per cent deduction from their holiday bonus as a pretext for launching their own attacks on police and property. More than 100 people—Bl civilian and 28 police—have so far been injured in the riots. An extra 1400 police, including elite State police and the semi-military Royal Constabulary, have been drafted into Amsterdam to reinforce the city force.
