Overseas Investment

Sir,—l agree with “Not Another Yankee,” as 62,000 acres is just the beginning of the sell-out. As a Canadian, I speak from experience. The Canadian Governments, over the last 50 years, have gradually given away Canada and Canadian heritage for the almighty American dollar. It is still going on now as the Canadian Government barters away Canada’s lakes and rivers. I find it strange indeed that Mr Holyoake should refuse Lord Thomson’s investment but allow American investment Maybe it is not so strange. If they allowed outside interests to invest in our news media, would be opposition an® competition which we are not ready

for. Newspapers in this country are mediocre and monotonous, almost afraid to print controversy (“The Press,” one of the few exceptions). Once America gets a toe-hold in New Zealand, she’ll never retreat. In 20 years Kiwis will no longer hold title of their country; Americans will.— Yours, etc., SHIRLEY M. ROSS. June 16,-1966.
