The Budget

Sir,—This must surely be the most insipid Budget ever

presented to New Zealand. Slow strangulation of the initiative, energies, and progress of a young country by the heavy hand of the State can only lead to suffocation. The world is crying out for ever more quantities of produce, etc., but this Budget ignores the plea and wraps New Zealand in an even thicker coat of socialist cotton wool. Certain measures have been advocated by the Monetary Council; but it being election year, these remedies are glossed over, and no doubt will be offered an even thicker coat by the Opposition in a vain hope of obtaining the people’s vote. This sodalist stifling policy of both parties is pushing us all underground. It is time the windows were opened to let in some clean strong political air to the House on the Hill. —Yours, etc., F.W.P.F. June 17, 1966.
