Eighth Time In Final

B. J. McPhedran, of South Canterbury, won a qualifying round for the New Zealand ploughing championship at the Lincoln Ploughing Match Association’s annual match held on Mr J. E. Beattie’s property in Tancreds road, Lincoln, yesterday.

This was the eighth time that McPhedran had qualified for the New Zealand final. In 1960 he won the national championship, and in each of the last three national finals he was second. This year’s final will be held at Gore on July 30. Two other former national champions, E. J. Croy and R. M. Kingsbury, both of Wakanui, were fourth and fifth yesterday. One of the judges, Mr J. T. Wyllie, of Amberley, said that the ground cut very well, and the standard of ploughing was very high, with some very good finishes. The veteran Templeton ploughman, J. G. Carter, ploughed the best plot on the groun'., and he won the Pearson Cup for the eleventh time when he took first place in the double-furrow, coulter-cut class.

Twelve-year-old C. A. Coleman, the only son of the secretary of the Lincoln association (Mr A. L. Coleman), took second place in the class for” two or more furrows, plain ploughing, for mounted ploughs with long boards. Placings were:— Atlantic Silver Plough Qualifying Event.—B. J. Hearn, of the Atlantic Union Oil Company, presented the prizes to the winner in the Silver Plough class, and the principal of Lincoln College (Dr. M. M. Burns) presented the other awards.
