University Concert

Mr Roger Buckton, accompanied by Mr Wallace Woodley, began the concert in the University Hall yesterday afternoon with flute solos by Roussel, Honegger and Faure. He played with confident control of the instrument, producing a legato flow of attractive tone, well modulated in expression, and with clear demarcation of phrasing. The varying atmospheres and general characteristics of each piece were artistically captured. Honegger’s “Danse de la Chevre’’ was written for flute alone and had charming rustic and pastoral sound, interesting and holding the attention attractively. Pleasing colours and fetching lilts were heard in the Fantasie by Faure. Mr Woodley was a deft and discerning accompanist Miss Patricia Free, a pian-

ist who is soon to go to England for further study, played Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, Ravel’s “Jeux d’Eau,” and Liszt’s “Waldesrauchen.” She has fluent finger technique and can produce well-sounding tone. Longer acquaintance with these works will enable her to realise more of their inner possibilities. —C.F.B.
