N.Z. DOG TRIALS

Finals For Tomorrow All competitors In the long head, short head and yard, and the zig-zag huntaway events at the national sheep dog trials, Tai Tapu, are expected to have completed their runs by this afternoon. The seven leading dogs In each event will automatically be the placed dogs in the South Island championships. On Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., the same dogs will runoff for the New Zealand championships, with the winner being decided on an aggregate of both runs. After a sharp morning frost yesterday the day was fine and sunny, with one of the biggest crowds of the week. Of the 139 competitors in the long head, 116 have had their runs and the seven leading dogs remain unchanged. They are: W. W. Ross’s (Rangwahia) Jet, R. Dixon’s (Rangiora) Ben, G. J. Brennan’s (Fielding) Dick, R. M. Wilson’s (Kirwee) Patch, J. A. Rodgers’s (Martinborough) Lass, N. Brigg’s (Pleasant Point) Glen, and W. W. Ross's (Rangiawahia) Speed. The seven leading dogs in the other events are (but not necessarily in order of placing):— Short head and yard (117 competitors having run): D. W. Lane's (Blenheim) Chance, W. W. Ross’s (Rangiwahla) Jet, L. J. Knight’s (Te Kuiti) Trek, D. P. Harold’s (Pongaroa) Blue, B. W. Murphy’s (Taranaki) Swift, R. H. Davis’s (Ngongotaha) Dick. W. D. Gebbie’s (Christchurch) Shep.

Zig-zag Huntaway (60 of the 116 competitors having run):— D. W. Lane’s (Blenheim) Kelp, D. McPherson’s (Waimate) Rum, B. W. Murphy's (Taranaki) Gleam, D. S. Morris’s (Cheviot) Vow, R. J. Christie’s (Gore) Sharp, W. J. Cunningham’s (Geraldine) Fog, J. D. Lowe’s (Takapau) Boy. Because of the number of entries still to be run-off in the zig-zag huntaway, the event, for South Island championship placings, could continue until Saturday morning.
