Ear Tattooing Tested
The first tests to see whether ear tattooing is suitable as a means of identifying horses were made on behalf of the Trotting Conference this week.
Equipment, the same as that used for marking cattle, was used on a bay three-year-old with dark-coloured ears, and a black yearling at Mr J. D. Litten’s West Melton property. The tests, in front of officials of the conference, including the president (Mr A. J. Nicoll), of Ashburton, and other interested persons, did not upset the two horses. The markings will be inspected occasionally to test their clarity. Further tests are likely before the conference is satisfied with ear tatooing as a means of identification.
