Some Slept

(X Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 16. Several members dozed intermittently, others made notes, but the majority listened in what appeared to be thoughtful silence to the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) present the Budget in Parliament last night. In an upstairs gallery, a woman, one of the 150 spectators, sewed throughout. Applause from the Government benches marked the end of the hour-long reading. As the clapping ended, Mr W. A. Fox (Opp., Miramar) called out: “Now tell us what you’re doing for the workers.”

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake): Are you disappointed we didn’t increase cigarettes and beer?

The Budget debate will begin on Tuesday evening.
