The French runner, M. Jazy, clocked 3min 36.3 sec yesterday to improve the European 1500 metres record by one-tenth of a second. His time was the second fastest recorded for the distance. Only the Australian, H. G. Elliott, whose world record is 3min 35.65ec, has a faster time to his credit. Jazy, holder of the world one mile record, improved the previous European record of 3min 36.45ec set by J. May, of East Germany.
Jazy’s record run came only a few hours after he revealed that he was considering quitting athletics because “it is no fun for me any more.” He said that he would make a decision after the European championships in Budapest later this year, in which he will run both the 1500 and the 5000 metres. Jazy previously held the European 1500 metres with a time of 3min 37.8 sec. He said at the beginning of this season that Elliott’s world record was his target
