W. Indians 51 For Two (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. Heavy rain cut play to little more than an hour before lunch on the first day of the second cricket test at Lord’s. During this period the West Indies, who had won the toss, lost two wickets for 51 runs. M. C. Carew, who was brought into the team in place of E. D. McMorris, was caught by the wicket-keeper, J. M. Parks, off the bowling of K. Higgs with only eight runs on the board. Carew had scored two. Higgs also claimed the second wicket, with the total 42, when R. B. Kanhai, who made 25, edged the ball to F. J. Titmus at first slip. When rain stopped play, C. C. Hunte was 16 and B. F. Butcher three. Higgs’s two wickets had cost 14 runs off eight overs, five of which were maidens. England omitted the Yorkshire bowler, R. Illingworth, from the players it name originally. This left the coloured South African, B. D’Oliveira, to make his debut for England.
